About QcorHome
QcorHome is an independent educational resource helping Canadian homeowners make informed decisions about renovations, home repairs, building materials and hiring contractors.
Why QcorHome exists
Over the years, homeowners and contractors have shared the same kind of story with us: a bad contractor delivers mediocre work, or collects the money and disappears. Another contractor then has to step in and save the day. Often the original contractor never stays through the inspection stage and stops responding to the owner.
We don’t like that this keeps happening. QcorHome was created to empower homeowners and give them peace of mind that they are starting the project right, and seeing it through, from start to finish.
A lesson I learned the hard way
I learned this personally. On a very large renovation, I relied on a single quote from a small residential painter I already worked with and trusted. The job turned out to be well beyond what his business could handle. I built my budget around his number, and when he could not carry the work through to the finish stage, the mistake cost me more than $9,000.
I then made a second mistake: I hired his replacement after one good conversation and a look at his truck and tools, without checking references or the company’s history.
Both mistakes were avoidable. Match the contractor to the size of the job, never rely on a single quote, and verify before you commit. Every guide and tool on QcorHome is built around those lessons.
